PTO Shaft Maintenance: A Practical Guide for Rotavator Users

Practical information for farmers, dealers and agricultural machinery users

A Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft transfers rotational power from a tractor to an implement such as a rotavator. Because it contains rotating components, correct fitment, guarding and maintenance are essential for safe and reliable operation.

1. Follow safety instructions first

Switch off the tractor, disengage the PTO, remove the key and wait for all rotating parts to stop before inspecting the shaft. Never approach or work on a rotating PTO shaft. Keep all guards and shields correctly fitted.

2. Inspect the guards and safety devices

Check that the PTO guard, shaft shielding and retaining devices are present, secure and undamaged. Do not operate equipment with missing or damaged guards.

3. Check fitment and compatibility

Use a PTO shaft with the correct connection type, length and capacity for the tractor and implement. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions for installation and adjustment.

4. Look for wear or damage

Inspect tubes, yokes, joints, locking pins and other components for cracks, deformation, excessive play or other damage. Replace worn parts using suitable components.

5. Lubricate as specified

Lubrication intervals and grease points vary by shaft design. Follow the shaft manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and use the specified lubricant.
